I’m standing as an independent candidate in the May 4th Comhairle elections, for the Steòrnabhagh a Deas (Stornoway South) ward.

I was encouraged to do so by the creation of the newly established Hebrides Women’s Network. This group provides support structures for anyone identifying as female in the Western Isles, as well as benefitting the wider community.

Background

I am:

Committed to improving the digital infrastructure of the Western Isles, to benefit economic
opportunities and social cohesion.

A chartered librarian, who would fight for properly resourced library services - information
provision informs democratic processes and social inclusion.

A heritage professional: I understand the importance of cultural institutions such as Museum nan
Eilean Siar in driving local economic regeneration.

Memberships

I am also a member of:

The Western Isles Secular Society, which challenges religious privilege in public life.

Families into Sport for Health, which campaigns for equal access to CnES leisure facilities in the
Western Isles.

Stonewall, which works for equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people.

Republic, which campaigns for a democratic alternative to the monarchy.

Friends of the Earth Scotland, which works for environmental justice.

The Scottish Green Party; as an independent, I would resign my Green Party membership were I elected, though would still be informed by its ethos.

This background illustrates my commitment to a socially diverse and forward-looking Western Isles. My appointment would also help to redress the current gender-imbalance of the Comhairle.
